Europa Liget
Beneath the walls of the historic Castle District, near the Vienna Gate, lies one of the city’s most private parks, the Europe Liget. It was opened on 4 September 1972 to commemorate the centenary of the capital and the congress of 29 European capitals held on that occasion. The leaders of each capital city planted a tree that was typical of the flora of their country and that could withstand Hungary’s climate. The name of the donating city is inscribed on a limestone plaque in front of the trees. A statue of Zoltán Kodály, sculpted by Imre Varga in 1982, stood in the park on Hunfalvy Street. The park, which had been in a state of disrepair for many years, was renovated by the district council in 2017 and has become a pleasant recreational area, with benches, shaded paths and a truly tranquil and idyllic setting above the city.
